Adobe photoshop cs2?

let's say I have a box. I use the magic wand on the background. this way when I paint I won't color on the box. but. what if I use the styles? when I click one. even if it's only the background. the whole page gets fill yet i'm still able to see the box out line of the box. I forgot how but how to I use the styles without going n the box? yes I tried making a new layer. HELP PLZ
