Why are McCain aides Scapegoating Palin?

I have a huge amount of respect for John McCain because he's a war hero that gave up his freedom, so that we could have ours. Ever since this election, however, I've been disgusted with a lot of his actions. Throwing Palin under the bus is just another appalling deed to add to the list. What happen to the old McCain from 2000?
