What is Monotheism? Why it is important?

If memory serves me monotheism became a huge deal in ancient Egypt. It caused an overwhelming cultural revolution when the father of Tutankhamen declared that there was only one god and it was the Sun god Ra. Later the priests of the other deities overthrew him and Tut became king.That was the first time that a huge civilization was declared monotheistic.
