How do you draw reflections in the water?

I'm drawing a picture for art cl, and there is a hand with it's reflection in the water. How do you draw the water in a way that people know it's water, and not just an upside down hand under a hand. I was thinking of putting ripples, but i didn't really know how to draw it with all the values and such. Thanks for all the help in advance!
