Need help stripping a curio knick-knack?

I have this very old curio knick-knack curio that at was time was horribly varnish with a deep reddish cherry shelac......I',m trying to strip it down but finding a hard time getting the individual shelves shelac free.......any hints out there? i've made a mess but they'res gotta be an easy way please help..........thank you
